Student Questions

  • MyMathLab Answer Key – This is one of the most frequent search terms that leads people to my blog and, to be honest, I’m not sure what it means. So, I’ll take a couple of stabs at it.
    If you are looking for an answer key for a homework assignment, there isn’t one. Homework problems are randomly generated, so each student could have a different problem making an answer key impossible.
    If you are looking for an answer key to a quiz, you may be in luck. If your instructor has enabled the option to let you review your quiz after you submit it, then the answers will be displayed for you. To review a quiz, go to your gradebook and select “Review” from the drop down menu for that quiz.
  • How do I graph 3 points for a line?
    Many instructors (including me) ask their students to graph 3 points when graphing a line, but MyMathLab will only ask you to graph 2 of those points. However, you should still come up with 3 points when graphing the line by hand. After you graph 2 of the points, check to make sure that your third point is on the line.

Instructor Questions

  • I’m using MyMathLab in my classes this semester. Is it possible to setup the homework to allow a student to go back and redo the home before the due date.
    For example, on exams I can setup multiple attempts. Is it possible to setup multiple attempts with homework?

    Unless you set it up otherwise, students get an unlimited number of attempts on each question, so they can come back and try problems any time unless the deadline has expired.
    For students to attempt a problem again, they click on the problem and then on the “Similar Exercise” button.
  • I am thinking about requiring my students to keep a MathXL notebook – just a spiral, 1-subject notebook, where they do all of their problems. What are your thoughts on this?
    I hear about this a lot at MML regional meetings, and I think it’s a great idea. The idea is that, as an instructor, I need to see my students’ work. This shows your students that the process, and not just finding the right answer somehow, is important.
    In the past I have collected the work for MML quizzes and incorporated this into my student contract. (I also collect some book homework and do in-class work, so I do see how my students are doing, but this helps student’s to do their MML work the way we want them to.) This was a good way to see what my students were doing, without having them turn in all of their homework, which can get pretty lengthy when students attempt problems more than once.
