Section Videos In MyMathLab

The reason that I love using MyMathLab in my classes is that there is something there for every student. Students have different learning styles, and MyMathLab has a tool to match any style. I used to get frustrated when students would tell me that they were trying, but were unable to learn and understand. The main problem was that they couldn’t find a tool to supplement their learning in a way that worked for them. With MyMathLab, those days are over.

Some students learn best by doing, and are well served to jump directly into the homework or study plan problems and work their way through. Other students learn by reading the textbook and its examples. For students who learn by watching and reflecting, check out the MyMathLab section videos.

MyMathLab Section Videos

In MyMathLab, students have access to videos that are tied to the textbook. (In my book, we work out one example for each objective in the section. We don’t just work out the problems, but also provide commentary and insight as we go. All of the Pearson texts I have used do the same.)

To get to these videos, students can click on the “eBook” button or the “Chapter Contents” button, depending on how your course is labeled. They then click on the chapter and section of interest to find a link to the video. They can also find the videos through the Multimedia Library.

Some videos play through the MyMathLab video player, while others require the Apple QuickTime plug-in. The videos are captioned, some in Spanish. Students can also pause or rewind.

Using The Videos

The first use of the videos is for students who miss class. They can go watch a video covering the problems that they missed. I don’t promote this idea, because I don’t want my students to think that they can skip class and just watch the videos instead.

I do promote watching the videos as part of a student’s study strategy.

  • They can watch the videos for a quick refresher before starting their homework.
  • They can look at a video when they are having trouble with a particular homework problem.
  • They can watch a video before class to preview that day’s lecture.
  • They can cycle through the videos while preparing for a chapter exam.

I have an ESL student who uses the videos as a remediation tool. She attempts each quiz, and analyzes her work. For problems that she got incorrect, she watches the videos and reworks the problems using the video as a guide. If she is able to get all of the correct answers, she goes back and retakes the quiz.

She tells me that it is easier for her to understand the mathematics by seeing it done while the presenter is speaking. She does not understand static problems in the textbook because the steps and the explanations are not in sync. She also mentions that it is helping her to learn English as well!

Summary

The MyMathLab videos are a powerful tool to help those students who learn by watching and participating. I encourage you to encourage your students to check them out. If your students find them helpful, they’ll work them into their overall strategy. Some students will find that the videos do not match their learning style – encourage those students to find the tool that will help them.
